The Gulf of Maine Research Institute's educational program, "Lobster: Untold Tales" for Maine's 5th and 6th grade students is an interactive, multi-media program. It is designed to prolong the students' and educators' experience through resources provided online through classroom lesson plans, personal student websites, and an ongoing conversation about marine science on a student accessible blog.
As educators register their students for the program, they will be entering student's first and last names on an online registration form. This form will only be accessible by the educator and GMRI education staff. No other personal information will be collected about the students.
Throughout GMRI's program, "Lobster: Untold Tales", students will be completing scientific investigations at four Lab Venture Stations. During these investigations, students will be taking team photographs, recording hypotheses and conclusions, saving data, and taking digital photographs.
All of this personal content collected by the students will be saved to their own personal websites. Note that all content will be reviewed before being saved. Only GMRI staff and educators and students whom have participated in the "Lobster: Untold Tales" program will have access to that content.
Each student's personal website will only be accessible by them, using their personal usernames and passwords that they receive after their visit. Students will have the ability to view the data collected during their visit to GMRI, and also to add new content, that will be reviewed before being saved to their websites.
These student websites are meant to provide students with a useful and personal record of their experience at GMRI's program "Lobster: Untold Tales". These websites can also be used by educators to dive deeper into content areas explored throughout the program as indicated in online classroom lesson plans.
GMRI also wants to extend student's personal experiences by providing a forum for interested students to chat about marine science and related topics. This will be done through a blog (weblog) that students will become members of after their visit. Students will have the opportunity to chat with marine scientists and educators at GMRI. This will be a monitored conversation where students will not be asked for any personal information. Their comments will only be viewed by other students with passwords and participating GMRI staff.
GMRI strives to provide a safe place for students to explore marine science through access to personal data collected during their visit and through ongoing conversations about marine science.
