A New Way to Count Fish

Thursday, July 23, 2015 by Kim Little

Knowing exactly how many fish are in the ocean is impossible but knowing roughly how big a population is, is very important. Population estimates are used to set the fishing rules and regulations.  These rules tell fishermen what fish they are allowed to keep and help prevent overfishing. Currently scientists collect samples from many different areas to make population estimates.

A new tool, called Deep Vision, is being developed at the Institute of Marine Research in Norway. It will help scientists make better estimates without having to remove fish from the water! Deep Vision will take photos of fish as they swim through the fishing net. The photos will provide scientists with better data about fish populations.
