City Nature Challenge April 27-30

Monday, April 23, 2018

Are you looking for a fun excuse to get outside this spring? Join us in the City Nature Challenge (CNC) on April 27-30 (or, as we’re calling it in Maine, the “City” Nature Challenge).

Nine Maine counties are going toe-to-toe with some of the world’s biggest cities in a biodiversity celebration and competition to document life. Which area will see the most posted observations of the most species? Which area will identify the most species in those observations? Will Maine beat Mumbai, India? Boston? Baltimore? Maybe even Barcelona? Scroll to the bottom of the CNC page to see a map of participating cities.

Here’s what you can do to help meet the challenge in Maine:

  1. Create an account in iNaturalist.
  2. Visit Maine's project page and click on the very small text that says “join this project” (at the top-right corner of the page).
  3. If you like, download the iNaturalist app to your smartphone or tablet, and practice using it.
  4. Go outside on April 27-30 and take as many pictures of wild plants, fungi, animals, bugs, etc., as you can.
  5. Upload your observations to iNaturalist (using the app or the website).
  6. Tell your friends! Spread the word! You can follow the action on Twitter @citnatchallenge.

You don’t have to live in the Maine CNC area to participate, but your observations of wildlife must be made in those counties.

We hope you join us to celebrate spring and life in Maine!
