Maine’s passionate, talented educators are an invaluable treasure. You engage your students with science and give them the tools to think critically about their world. You inspire us to create cutting edge science experiences that support your innovative work.

At the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, we’re striving to develop science literacy among Maine’s next generation, and we know that you are our crucial ally in this effort.

Each year, we ask the Maine education community to help us recognize one educator who provides exceptional science experiences to students.

We awarded the first Kevin McCarthy Education Innovation Award in May 2014, to Pat Parent – a Massabesic Middle School teacher and an extraordinary partner of GMRI’s Vital Signs program. The award is named after a retired CEO of Unum in honor of the company’s longtime support of GMRI and other science education initiatives in Maine. The selected teacher will be recognized at an event at GMRI in May and at their school. The teacher will also receive a $100 gift card for his or her classroom.

We welcome you to nominate a teacher that works with one or more of GMRI’s education programs and exemplifies the qualities and principles below.

1.    Equal access - The teacher provides learning experiences so that all students have equal access to learning.

2.    Authentic science experiences - The teacher's classroom and curriculum provide opportunities for students to experience authentic science by taking on the role of scientists.

3.    Interest, Understanding, Connection - The teacher's classroom and curriculum provide opportunities for students to gain understanding of and interests in science content, science practices, 21st century skills, and their own connection to science.

4.    Designing for engagement - The teacher provides engaging experiences for his/her students.

5.    Reflective Practice - The teacher is reflective, iterative, and also supports his/her students in being so as well.

6.    Commitment to excellence, persistence, selflessness, and creativity.
