Nominate an educator for the 2018 McCarthy Award!

Monday, February 26, 2018 by Savannah

GMRI is soliciting nominations for the 2018 Kevin McCarthy Education Innovation Award! This is an annual award that GMRI started in 2014 in collaboration with Unum to honor dedicated teachers across Maine that are involved with GMRI programs and exemplify the leadership qualities of the award's namesake, former Unum CEO Kevin McCarthy.

At GMRI, we are striving to develop science literacy among Maine’s next generation and we know that collaborating with educators in this effort is key to our shared success. Maine’s passionate, talented educators are an invaluable treasure. Each year since 2014, we’ve asked the Maine education community to help us select an educator for the Kevin McCarthy Education Innovation Award, and to help us celebrate that educator for the exceptional science experiences they provide to students. The selected educator will receive a $500 gift card for his or her classroom and be recognized at a special event.

We welcome you to nominate yourself or an educator you know that works with one or more of GMRI’s education programs and exemplifies some or all of the qualities and principles listed below:

1. Equal access - The educator provides learning experiences so that all students have equal access to learning.
2. Authentic science experiences - The educator's classroom and curriculum provide opportunities for students to experience authentic science by taking on the role of scientists.
3. Interest, Understanding, Connection - The educator's classroom and curriculum provide opportunities for students to gain understanding of and interests in science content, science practices, 21st century skills, and their own connection to science.
4. Designing for engagement - The teacher provides engaging experiences for his/her students.
5. Reflective Practice - The educator is reflective, iterative, and also supports his/her students in being so as well.
6. Commitment to excellence, persistence, selflessness, and creativity.

Nominate a fellow educator or yourself here by March 9. We look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you,

The GMRI Education Team
