Students Learn About Invasive Crabs During Lobster Trap Bycatch Study

Thursday, November 14, 2013 by Katie

The Chebeague School students are investigating species that enter a lobster trap other than lobsters. Students are hauling a trap twice a week to examine what species of bycatch they find inside. The school is teaming up with the Island Institute and using the data collected to produce graphs and provide information about invasive species, such as the green crab. One of the class’s fathers placed a GoPro camera in the trap, so the students could observe the activity inside the trap. The video was recorded for 35 minutes and compressed to 5 minutes by a volunteer technology instructor.
