Working Waterfront Tour
The Working Waterfront Tour showcases the rich and varied marine-dependent and related businesses on Portland’s working waterfront. On this hour-long tour, students will be exposed to an in-depth learning experience, highlighting Maine's hardworking lobster and commercial fishing industries, and hear about the day-to-day, as well as seasonal and financial, struggles and rewards of both. They will have an opportunity to view firsthand the interdependent nature of commerce on the waterfront, and will see how the X-Fish plays a key role in helping to sustain many of the businesses. It will be a unique opportunity for students to put into perspective all that they will have gleaned from their experiences at GMRI. The Portland Museum of Art plays a vital role in the cultural enrichment of youth in our community. Through education outreach programs in the schools and docent-guided tours of Museum exhibits, the PMA presents art for study in a way that's fun and educational. Art challenges students to see themselves and the world around them in new ways. We invite you, your family, or your students to explore the one-of-a-kind resources at the PMA.

The Maine Historical Society offers a variety of programs and resources designed to help teachers and students explore Maine history. These include programs at our one-acre campus in Portland, partnerships with schools around Maine, and resources on the web. All programs draw on MHS's extensive historical collections and the knowledge of our professional staff.
Our educational programs are an extension of Landmarks' ongoing work of preserving Portland's architectural heritage. We understand that responsible stewardship of our built environment rests with many constituencies, each with its own concerns and perspectives, and Landmarks targets programs and services to each of these groups. Chief among these constituencies are the region's youngest citizens: its school children.
The Portland Fish Exchange is America's first all-display fresh fish and seafood auction, operated in Portland, Maine. The Exchange offers a fair and open marketplace bringing together fishing vessels (sellers) with seafood wholesalers and processors (buyers). Fresh fish and seafood are unloaded from fishing vessels daily and displayed for buyers to make purchasing decisions. The auction is conducted at mid-day. Products purchased are destined for restaurants, markets, and processing plants within hours of vessel landings.
